Valley housing runs from the teens to brand new
That's the thing that makes Spokane Valley different from a single-vintage neighborhood. The panel you find varies enormously by street: a fuse box in one of the older pockets, a mid-century panel of a brand nobody makes any more, and a modern 200 amp service in a subdivision two blocks away. The failure is inside the breaker: it can fail to trip when it should, which means the thing protecting your wiring quietly stops protecting it. It appears related to how often the breaker has been cycled over the years. Not every panel fails. But you can't tell which one you have from the outside, and the consequence of the one that does is a fire.
A Valley panel where every breaker was stuck
We opened one in the Valley where every breaker was stuck in the closed position. It took real force to trip them by hand, not a firm push, actual force. They cycled better afterwards, once they'd been moved.
But we still wouldn't trust them. A breaker that needed help to move once is not a breaker you want between a fault and your framing. That panel got replaced, and that's the honest recommendation in most of these.
Fuse box replacement
If you have a fuse box rather than breakers, you're in the oldest part of the Valley housing stock, and fuse box replacement is routine work for us. It's rarely just the box: a fuse panel often has an older service behind it, so we look at the meter, the mast and the conductors at the same time and tell you whether it's a panel change or a service change.

Most Valley panel work comes through remodels
Kitchens, bathrooms, additions. And usually it's the contractor who brings us in, not the homeowner: the panel turns out to be full or obsolete once the scope is set, and somebody needs it handled without holding up the rest of the trades. We're used to working to another crew's schedule and inspection dates.
